The Phlegms
A Fayetteville, Arkansas-based post-punk band formed in 2016 by Avery Martin (vocals), Peter Grant McKitrick (guitar), Ethan Nash (bass), and Grant Williams (drums), The Phlegms combine tense, melodic vocals with sharp, driving instrumentation. Martin’s lyrics balance observation and confrontation, exploring themes like mental health, sexual violence, and modern relationships. The band developed a strong regional following through DIY shows and went on to perform alongside acts such as Mannequin Pussy, Protomartyr, and Shame. Following the release of their early EPs Self-titled (2017) and Smile (2018), Nash departed in 2019 and was replaced by Aaron Brymer. The band continued with EP Spit (2020) and the single “Filtering” (2021). In 2025, The Phlegms released their debut full-length album Gulp, a defining record that expands their range while sharpening their signature blend of melody and abrasion.
